Frequently Asked Questions
Below are several questions that interested parents and students often ask about the LSE Trap Team, along with answers and links to other useful resources on the web. If you have more questions, please feel free to contact us. Someone who knows will get back to you soon!
Juniors vs. Seniors?
You'll hear the terms "Juniors" and "Seniors" a lot. These terms do not refer to 11th ad 12th graders. Rather, "Seniors" means all high school students from 9th through 12th grade. "Juniors" is a term left over from the days of Junior High School, and now refers to all middle school students, from 6th through 8th grade.
When can we start?
All current Southeast students in good standing are eligible to join the team. Students at local high schools that do not have their own trap teams (e.g., Lincoln High, Palmyra High) are also welcome to join the Southeast team. Come learn a new skill, make some new friends, and participate in a fun school sport; we'd love to have you on the team!
What about middle school students?
Middle school students can join a team now! If your student’s middle school already has a trap team (e.g., Pound) then, according to conference rules, he or she must join that team. If your student’s middle school does not have a trap team, he or she can join a high school team; typically for the high school he or she plans to attend next year. We’d love to have your student on the Southeast team! Middle school students on the Southeast team compete in the Junior class against middle schoolers from other teams, but practice with their Southeast High teammates. It’s a great way for your middle schooler to get to know some Southeast students before becoming a high schooler!
Do we need any certification?
Yes! Safety is emphasized above all else in this sport. All team members are required by the ECTC to have a Nebraska Hunter Safety Certification (you must actually have the certificate) at least one week before the first divisional meet. You can take the basic course in person (i.e., classroom style) or on line. Those under 16 years old must also pass an in-person Hunt Safe Session. If you're 16 or older, you can do the entire thing online. It can take several days for your Hunter Education Card (containing your Certificate Number) to become available online, so plan ahead! You can learn more at the following Nebraska Game and Parks web pages:
What about training or experience?
Experienced and novice shooters are welcome to join the team. The team’s coaching staff will help your student learn and develop the skills, knowledge, and habits necessary to improve, compete, and have fun!
Who are the coaches?
The team’s coaches—all volunteers—are related to various team members or former team members. They’re all experienced trap shooters and compete together on teams in local summer and fall trap leagues. Most are certified instructors for youth shotgun sports and have passed background checks through LPS.
